The Lafayette Parish School System will soon move its central office to a larger, more modern office space.

Last week, the school board approved the purchase and renovation of the former Energy Plaza building at 202 Rue Iberville. The school system plans to consolidate all of its operations into that one facility.

In addition to approving the move to the new building, the school board approved the sale of the current 63-year-old central office on Chaplin Drive and the Vermilion Conference Center on Gauthier Road. The current central office property will be sold to Lafayette Regional Airport. The Vermilion Conference Center will be sold to Lafayette Consolidated Government ahead of of the planned construction of the I-49 Connector. The airport will use the 10-acre central office property for future airport expansion.

“LPSS is taking advantage of favorable market conditions to address a long-term need in a financially prudent way," LPSS finance director Matt Dugas said. "Our current central office building was built in 1958 and is woefully inadequate for the needs of our modern and thriving school system.”

The school system will continue to lease the Chaplin Drive facility until renovations at the Energy Plaza building are completed. Those renovations include creating a new school board meeting room on the premises.
