Lafayette Drivers Say These Are the 10 Worst Intersections for Red Light Runners
LAFAYETTE, La. – If you feel like red lights in Lafayette are just a suggestion to some drivers, you're not alone. Following the Lafayette Police Department’s launch of a 30-day Red Light Awareness campaign, local residents didn’t hold back when we asked them to name the worst intersections for red-light runners.
With over 400 comments pouring in, it’s clear that frustration is high.
Many residents report daily near-misses, and police have even witnessed drivers blasting through red lights up to six seconds after turning red—while cross traffic is already moving.
Top 10 Worst Intersections for Red-Light Running in Lafayette
1. Evangeline Thruway & Johnston St.
The entire stretch of the Thruway is a danger zone, but the intersection at Johnston Street takes the cake. Several commenters say it’s "wild" how many drivers treat red lights here like optional pauses.
2. Ambassador Caffery & Johnston St.
A hot spot for accidents, people frequently run reds here, leading to congestion and wrecks.
3. Ambassador Caffery & Kaliste Saloom Rd.
A common complaint was that the light is too short, leading to drivers gunning it at the last second—or well past it.
4. Pinhook Rd. & Kaliste Saloom Rd.
Many drivers admitted that this intersection gives them anxiety due to how often people push through a red.
5. Ambassador Caffery & Willow St.
“You better check both ways before moving when your light turns green,” one commenter warned.
6. Moss St. & Simcoe St.
Labeled as “chaos” by some, this intersection made the list for frequent red-light runners.
7. University Ave. & Pinhook Rd.
Left turns and straight traffic both suffer as people blow through the red, frustrating drivers who are following the law.
8. Ambassador Caffery & Guilbeau Rd.
Several people said this intersection has seen too many high-speed wrecks caused by reckless drivers running the red.
9. Dulles Dr. & Ambassador Caffery
This busy stretch is another spot where drivers frequently push their luck at the light.
10. Foreman Dr. & Congress St.
Located near Lafayette High, this intersection is a nightmare during school rush hours, with cars often blocking traffic and creating a standstill.
Lafayette Police Are Cracking Down
Since launching the Red Light Awareness Campaign, Lafayette Police have increased patrols, issuing citations to blatant violators. Sgt. Keith Deroche with LPD stated that officers aren’t targeting drivers who just barely misjudge a yellow—it's the ones who are flying through well after the light turns red that are getting stopped.
With over 11,300 crashes in Lafayette last year, the hope is that this campaign will help reduce collisions, insurance rates, and near-death experiences at intersections.
For now, if you're driving through these hotspots—stay alert, wait a second after your light turns green, and always watch for reckless drivers.
What are your thoughts on the list? Are any of them on your daily commute? While you're at it, let us know if there's an intersection that deserves to be on here.
