A 35-year-old Pierre Part man has been sentenced to life in prison for beating his mother to death in 2008.

State District Judge Jane Triche-Milazzo sentenced Charles Gaspard, after an Assumption Parish jury found Gaspard guilty of second-degree murder on August 6th in the slaying of his mother, Beatrice Ackman Gaspard. Gaspard was accused of beating his mother on September 1st, 2008, after he was awakened from a nap as Hurricane Gustav moved across the parish.  She died on September 5th after being taken off life support. Prosecutors said an autopsy found the cause of death was a subdural hematoma due to blunt force trauma.
