Louisiana Program Offers Financial Help for Renters and Landlords
The coronavirus pandemic has provided a vicious circle for those who rent their homes and those who are landlords to those renters. Namely, it's hard to earn rent money when you can't go to work because of lockdowns or slowdowns brought on by the virus. For landlords, it's hard to pay banknotes and mortgages on buildings with no income coming in from renters.
While there have been measures put in place to ease the burden on both renters and landlords, now that we are beginning to come out from under the pandemic more questions are arising as to who might be responsible to whom and for what, especially when it comes to back rent.
Keith Cunningham of the Louisiana Housing Corporation says a new state program has been launched that will help assist both renters and landlords as we move out of the pandemic and into a "more normal" economic pattern. The program will be administered by LCH along with the Louisiana Office of Community Development.
The program should allow landlords to collect on rental arrears from as far back as April of last year. The program will also offer qualifying renters rental assistance for three months in the future.
If you'd like to find out more about the program and what it has to offer and who is eligible simply visit this website. The program is funded through the federal Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2020. It is part of a $25 billion program for emergency rental assistance. $161 million dollars of that $25 billion has been allocated to Louisiana for rental assistance.
Both landlords and renters may apply for assistance in recovering past due rent or future rental relief.
