LUS Warns Lafayette Residents of Suspicious Door-to-Door Activity
LAFAYETTE, LA – Lafayette Utilities System (LUS) is alerting customers to be cautious after reports of individuals falsely claiming to represent LUS while going door-to-door.
According to LUS, multiple customers have reported encounters with individuals who say they are sales representatives from Mayer Solar. These individuals have allegedly been soliciting information, using the LUS logo without authorization, and making misleading claims.
One local resident (who wished to remain anonymous for her safety) shared her experience, stating that the group was asking to see utility bills and falsely claiming that electricity rates were set to double. They allegedly pitched solar energy as a solution, promising a fixed monthly rate with no upfront fees. However, they reportedly lacked official company vehicles, IDs, uniforms, or business cards and refused to provide proof of their claims.
Reports suggest these solicitors have been spotted in different areas of Lafayette, including Freetown, as noted by another resident, Kevin Domingue.
LUS: Official Representatives Will Have Proper Identification
LUS reminds customers that its official representatives always carry proper LUS identification. If anyone encounters suspicious individuals claiming to be affiliated with LUS, they should not share personal information or utility details.
What to Do if You Encounter Suspicious Activity
- Do not provide any personal or billing information.
- Ask for official identification. LUS representatives will always carry an official badge.
- Report suspicious individuals to the Lafayette Police Department.
- Verify any LUS-related inquiries by calling LUS Customer Service at (337) 291-8280.
If you have any reports of these door-to-door scams, report any questionable activity to LUS or the Lafayette Police Department.
