Lafayette Man Carjacks Vehicle, Police Chase Down Ambassador
What began as a man trying to help a fellow human being ended with a wild ride and an arrest. Witnesses observed a vehicle with a trailer attached weaving in and out of traffic.
The incident began to unfold at around 6 pm Tuesday (5/4/21) after the victim picked up a man in Maurice who said he just needed a ride to the Acadiana Mall. Upon arriving at the mall, the suspect, Daryion Bonnet, pulled out a knife and forced the owner out of the vehicle.
Corporal Bridgette Dugas says Bonnet started driving wildly down Ambassador Caffery. Bonnet hit multiple vehicles in a wild ride down Ambassador. Dugas says there were five minor crashes.
Eyewitnesses on social media described the wild scene, including many whose vehicles were hit on the street and in parking lots throughout the chase.
I was right there too! I saw when he hit the first few cars on ambassador and kaliste saloom. He jumped that concrete barrier and they trailer hitch started dragging! Scary!
Bonnet was finally stopped at a business in the 3700 block of Ambassador Caffery and the suspect took off on foot. He was subsequently captured by Lafayette police.
Dugas says Bonnet was charged with the following:
- Armed Robbery
- Two counts of Unauthorized Use of a movable
- Five counts of Hit and Run
- Aggravated Flight
- Resisting an Officer
- Reckless Operation
