Sixteen horses will be placed for adoption after they march in New Orleans Mardi Gras parades. Cascade Stables has been renting horses to Krewes for years. They've had to buy more than a dozen additional horses to meet growing demand. Cascade doesn't have capacity to care for the additional horses after Mardi Gras. AP reports, they're teaming up with the Humane Society of Louisiana, and Barney's Farm Sanctuary to place the horses for adoption. They would otherwise be sold to brokers. From there, the animals would be sold at auction, or taken for slaughter.

"It’s necessary and fair that we provide them with safe harborage and care after they have provided us with weeks of entertainment and frivolity,”    - Jeff Dorson, Humane Society of Louisiana
