Sheriff: Louisiana inmate found dead from alleged suicide

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A Louisiana sheriff's office says an inmate was found dead in a parish jail from an apparent suicide.

News outlets report staff at West Baton Rouge Parish jail found the inmate hanging by a bed sheet in his cell on Monday. Medical responders tried to revive him but where unsuccessful.

West Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office didn't immediately release the inmate's name.

Spokesman Maj. Zachary Simmers says the man was booked into the parish jail in May on charges out of Texas. No further details were immediately available.

Simmers says an investigation into the man's death is ongoing. He says a preliminary investigation found that correctional staff followed policies and procedures.
