LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL News) - Several school districts in South Louisiana are still weighing their options when it comes to re-opening campuses on Friday.

The decision is a tough one, thanks to lingering ice and snow on some roads and bridges throughout Acadiana. The historic snowstorm we saw throughout South Louisiana was unprecedented and while it is melting, lingering cold temperatures are making the process slow.

Ahead of Thursday, school districts like Lafayette Parish were keeping an eye on the situation.

"Every day a student is not in class represents lost instruction time," LPSS Superintendent Francis Touchet said in a statement. "The state requires us to administer testing within a window, and our standardized tests are scheduled to start on April 1. It's our responsibility to ensure that students are academically ready for success, but I will never sacrifice their safety."

Extended closures could end up meaning other breaks are shortened unless the state moves the testing window to accommodate.
