An update to this story.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has finally tagged the closed industrial site in Acadia Parish as a hazard and is due for cleanup.

The EVR-Wood treating facility and the adjacent Evangeline Refining Co., which date back to the 1930s, have been placed on the National Priorities List of Superfund sites since March. The Superfund was instituted in 1980 and is ran by the EPA.

This latest update allows for the cleanup to actually begin. The lumber treatment plants closed in 1985 and the refinery closed in 1981 after having produced naptha, kerosene, diesel, and fuel oil.

The site is located northeast of Jennings and got the attention after learning that contaminants from the sites could affect the wetlands nearby in Bayou Nezpique.
