It's pretty well documented that just about all of us know someone who will be on the road traveling more than 50 miles away from home this extended holiday weekend. For most of us, a short trip in the car will not likely be impacted by the weather. However, if you have air travel plans that will take you out of the Gulf South you could experience some travel headaches.

A strong low-pressure system with adjoining cold front will be sweeping across the nation this week. Its presence will most likely be felt in South Louisiana in the form of showers and thunderstorms during the day on Wednesday. In fact, the Storm Prediction Center has placed much of the state in the marginal risk zone for severe storms for that day.

As far as air travel is concerned, those who travel through Lafayette Regional Airport to one of the major hubs, Atlanta, Houston, or Dallas, should not experience weather delays. However, connecting flights out of those hubs to destinations in and around the northeast and midwest could be affected by wintry precipitation.

We do not anticipate any wintry precipitation along and south of I-10 over the Thanksgiving holiday. In fact, our temperatures will be approaching 80 degrees on Black Friday. So, you'll have to make your own kind of cold if you're looking to fire up your Christmas Spirit.

Transportation officials say this year's Thanksgiving holiday will be one of the busiest in the nation over the past 20 years. Almost 55 million people are expected to be traveling somewhere, just make sure that your travel plans and their travel plans don't connect because of an accident.
