(KPEL) -- The University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors has given approval to a deal that would transfer ownership of a 99-acre horse farm owned by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette to the Lafayette City-Parish Consolidated Government.

In exchange, the university will get $5.8 million, as well as the city's current Youth Park, which is adjacent to university property and faces Johnson Street.

The city wants to turn the farms into a passive park. That means it would focus more on biking and hiking trails, rather than the basketball courts and the like that are normally seen at most city parks.

The city-parish council will begin discussion on an ordinance at its meeting Tuesday night the would begin the transfer process.
