Acadiana has a lot of things, but a shortage of great food is not one of them. This year marks the 16th year of Eat Lafayette and despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 outbreak, it's starting soon. Lafayette Travel is recruiting restaurants to be a part of the annual event and there are some new incentives to get more of them involved.

Ben Berthelot of Lafayette Travel joined Acadiana's Morning News to unveil some of the new details of the program.

Lafayette Travel has waived the registration fee for the 2020 festivities. That means all former Eat Lafayette restaurants are already signed up. Now, new restaurants are encouraged to sign up on the Lafayette Travel website. This year there will be a focus on take-out fare as that is the reality for many of the participants.

"This campaign has always been about independently owned local restaurants —these restaurants are our cultural identifiers with cuisine and a vibe that is only found in Lafayette. The news is not exaggerating, and every local restaurant needs your help. We’re coming back one by one, and we’re going to need you too,” emphasizes Ken Veron, Chair of EatLafayette’s Advisory Board.

Lafayette Travel published one of the first all-inclusive lists of restaurants as the COVID-19 outbreak took shape. They have continued to promote those restaurants during this challenging time. The annual Eat Lafayette kick-off event which is usually held in April has been pushed back until August 25th. It will serve as a sort of closing ceremony for the annual event.
