EUNICE, La. (KPEL) -- A mother in Eunice has been arrested after a passerby found her 3-year-old child alone near the intersection Cotton and Aymond Roads.

According to the witness, the child was standing alone near the stop sign.

When police found the mother, she gave them the names of other people who were supposed to be watching over the child, said Deputy Chief Varden Guillory, spokesman for the Eunice Police Department.

Those people, though, said the child had never been given to them to babysit, Guillory said.

The mother, 29-year-old Rebecca Owens, was taken into custody and booked into jail on a charge of improper supervision of a minor. She was released by summons, Guillory said.

Owens' court date has been set for Oct. 28 at the Eunice City Court, Guillory

said.
