Father's day is a reminder to be thankful for the men who provide for you in your life, but what if that man is behind bars. The thankfulness for the men at the Phelps Correctional Center in Lake Charles doesn't stop at the door.

Nearly 100 inmates were able to send Father's Day cards to their children yesterday.

Assistant Warden Jolene Constance says,

the new program aims to remind offenders of what is waiting for them on the outside, to help fathers connect with their children — and, hopefully, to encourage them to get a job to support those children."

98 inmates participated in the program and the cards were shipped all over the United States and some even outside of the country.

Inmate Darryl Soileau said it made him realize that Father's Day isn't about getting a present — the child is the gift.
