The Lafayette Consolidated Government Compost Facility at 400 Dugas Rd. will begin an adjusted weekend schedule for the winter months, beginning this Saturday.

Due to a seasonal slowdown in the demand for mature compost, the facility will be opened only one Saturday per month, for three months.  On the second Saturday in December, January, and February, the facility will be open from 7 a.m. until noon.

The Saturdays the facility will be open are Dec. 14, Jan. 11, and Feb. 8.

The facility is open year-round Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., with the exception of holidays.

“We’ve noted for the past couple of years that the compost facility has fewer persons coming to pick up compost on Saturdays during the winter months,” said environmental quality manager Mark Pope.”It simply doesn’t make economic sense to pay an employee to be on duty for five hours with a limited influx of persons coming to drop yard waste or to pick up cured compost.”

Yard waste is collected curbside from residents served by Allied Waste, and is brought to the compost facility for processing.

Citizens may drop yard waste off at the facility at a cost of $6 per cubic yard.  Cured compost may be picked up for free by constituents of Lafayette Consolidated Government.

Residents can drop off yard waste or pick up compost Monday through Friday, or on the Saturdays the facility is open during the winter months.
