Lafayette Man Robbed at Gunpoint, Car Stolen in Frightening Late-Night Attack
A Lafayette man is recovering after a terrifying armed robbery that left him hurt but thankful to be alive.
Drew Garrett Martin shared graphic details of the incident on Facebook, describing how he was held at gunpoint and had his car stolen Thursday morning around 1 a.m. in an area near Eraste Landry and Bertrand Drive in Lafayette. According to Martin, the suspect had been waiting in a vehicle behind his car and practically ambushed him as he was leaving. The gunman, armed with a rifle, demanded that Martin escort him inside a nearby building where his friends were—presumably to rob them as well. Fortunately, his friends were watching security footage and were able to act quickly.
Fearing for his life, Martin handed over everything in his pockets and pleaded for the suspect to take his car and leave. A second individual, who appeared to be helping the suspect, waited across the street before fleeing in another vehicle. Martin managed to escape by running and jumping over a barbed-wire fence, leaving him with minor injuries.
Authorities later told Martin that the same suspect had robbed another person at gunpoint in Duson. His car was eventually found, but police have not disclosed its condition.
Since posting about the incident, Martin’s social media has been flooded with messages from friends and family expressing relief that he’s okay. Many have called the situation “terrifying, " hoping the suspects are caught soon.
The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement has not released any arrest updates. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact local authorities.
