LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — The city of Lake Charles and the union for city firefighters have reached an agreement addressing personnel matters including the deduction of union dues and representation of individual firefighters in disciplinary matters.

The American Press reports that the "memorandum of understanding" is less strict than a contract.

Lake Charles Mayor Randy Roach, in a meeting last week, said the memorandum includes an agreement for the city to deduct union dues form firefighter pay. Roach said it also deals with creation of a management committee in partnership with the fire chief to work through policy issues and other questions that might come up during day-to-day operations.

District Fire Chief Chris Carroll said the flexibility in the memorandum of understanding is good for the firefighters.
