Louisiana Teen Arrested After Loaded Gun Found in Backpack
What should have been a random routine bag search at Tara High School in Baton Rouge led to a shocking discovery Monday morning when deputies found a loaded gun inside a student’s backpack.
While the 16-year-old student did not make any threats or attempt to use the weapon, he was taken into custody and charged with the illegal carrying of a firearm and possession of a firearm on school property.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office Drug Task Force was performing a random bag search when they found a loaded gun in a student's bag. Authorities have not released further details about how the weapon ended up in the student’s possession or if any additional individuals are involved.
WAFB reported that When the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office deputies questioned the student about the loaded gun in his bag, he claimed he did not know why it was in his bag.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not disclosed whether additional charges may be filed.
The Following Letter Was Sent To Parents:
"Dear Tara High School Families,
I want to take a moment to inform you about a situation that occurred on our campus this morning. Our dean of students discovered a weapon in an abandoned backpack outside the school. Thanks to a thorough investigation, we were able to identify the student responsible, and the student has since been charged by the School Drug Task Force.
The student abandoned the backpack after seeing the security measures in place upon arrival. This incident reinforces the importance of our safety protocols, and we are grateful to our dean for his vigilance in ensuring the well-being of our students and staff. We firmly believe that our security measures helped prevent this weapon from entering our campus.

Our school has a zero-tolerance policy for this behavior, and we will take swift and appropriate action to maintain a safe learning environment.
Thank you for your partnership in keeping Tara High a secure and supportive place for all students. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.
