SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — A 36-year-old Shreveport man will serve a lengthy prison term after avoiding a jury trial and entering a guilty plea to charges of rape and kidnapping in Caddo District Court.

The Times reports (http://bit.ly/ILRREh ) Robert James Washington Jr. was sentenced Wednesday by District Judge Scott Crichton to 40 years in prison at hard labor on one count of forcible rape and 40 years in prison at hard labor on one count of second degree kidnapping. Crichton ordered the prison terms to be served concurrently.

Washington entered his plea just before jurors were scheduled to begin hearing opening statements in the trial Wednesday.

Washington pleaded guilty to the March, 2010 rape of a juvenile at a church.
