LAFAYETTE, La. — If there’s one thing Lafayette knew about Red Lerille, it’s that he never did anything halfway. Even in his final moments with us, Red found a way to stop traffic, spark conversation, and turn heads across the city he loved.

On Saturday, March 22, as Red was laid to rest, a remarkable sight rolled through the streets of Lafayette—a procession of his prized Lamborghinis, classics, and exotic cars, leading him past Red Lerille’s Health & Racquet Club one last time. It was a tribute as unique and larger-than-life as the man himself.

“They had all of his Lamborghinis in a line, driving him by Red’s one last time,” one witness said — a powerful moment that quickly spread across social media and countertop conversations across Acadiana. Videos from folks in the community like Bob Moore and Jessica Dogie captured the awe of the moment, as locals paused to watch Red take one final lap around his legacy.

Red Lerille passed away on March 14, 2025, at the age of 88. For many, it was a moment that didn’t seem possible. Red was the kind of man people thought might just live forever — and in some ways, he will.

A Navy veteran, Mr. America 1960, and a lifelong advocate for health and wellness, Red built his gym from the ground up in the early 1960s. What started as a small club became a world-class facility that attracted athletes, celebrities, and everyday members who simply wanted to better themselves — something Red lived for. In fact, he passed just as a new expansion of the club neared completion — another example of how he was always looking ahead.

Red loved his family. He loved his community. And yes — he loved a beautiful car. So it was only fitting that he made his final ride through Lafayette in a fleet as legendary as he was.

In the days since his passing, the gym has been quieter — more reflective — but also full of renewed appreciation for the space Red built. Members have been sharing memories, lessons, and gratitude for the man who gave so much of himself to this city.

He’ll be remembered for his discipline, his passion, his humility, and that unmistakable smile that greeted early morning members as he picked up trash in the parking lot like it was his very first day on the job.

Rest easy, Red. You left Lafayette stronger, healthier, and better than you found it — and we’ll do our best to carry that legacy forward.
