Safety Should Be Top Priority When Driving This Christmas Season

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development wants to remind all drivers that, just like you, thousands of other people will be travelling during the Christmas season.

Local DOTD spokesman Deidre Druilhet joined KPEL during "Nathan and Bernie in the Morning" today to remind drivers that people will be travelling more during this time of year to visit family, friends, go to parties and get their shopping done.

Druilhet offers several tips on thing you need to think about before heading out on a trip:

• Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination
• Always be alert for changing traffic situations while driving
• Avoid any distractions while driving
• Plan your trip ahead so you know where you are going if you are not familiar with the area

Druilhet adds that if you have questions about major roads or construction,

"You should look up your travel route before you leave on your trip at http://www.511la.gov so you can know about construction, traffic lane closures or major traffic crashes before you leave the house."
