WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal officials who oversee security clearance for government employees will face a Senate committee investigating the deadly shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.

Today's hearing is to examine whether background checks and security clearances for federal employees and contract workers is adequate, and it comes as officials investigate how defense contractor Aaron Alexis was able to have secret clearance despite a series of violent outbursts, repeated brushes with the law and concerns about his mental health.
