PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The National Weather Service says a messy mix of rain, snow and sleet is bearing down on the Northeast for the first significant winter storm of the season to affect the Interstate 95 corridor.

Forecasters say it's unclear where the line between rain and snow will be, but some areas away from the coast could expect 8 inches or more of snow.

The storm should arrive in the Philadelphia region late Friday and dump 1 to 4 inches on the area. New York City should see 2 to 5 inches starting early Saturday. The storm will continue northeast to Connecticut and Massachusetts before ending early Sunday.

The weather service says even areas that don't see snow accumulations could experience hazardous road conditions with ice, sleet, rain and heavy winds.
