We think of the airbag in our automobile as a life-saving device. Not the kind of device that could cause injury or death. Unfortunately, the latter has been the catalyst for the Takata Corporation to expand their recall of airbag ignitors to an additional 3.3 million vehicles.

Vehicles impacted by this additional recall include those manufactured in 2009,2010, and 2013.  Among the makes and models affected are vehicles from Honda, Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Fiat, General Motors, Jaguar, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, and Tesla.

According to a report from CBS News, the airbag issue involves the chemicals used in the airbags that make them inflate so quickly. There have been reports that these chemicals burn too fast especially when exposed to heat and humidity. This has resulted in at least 20 confirmed fatalities and multiple injuries.

If you are driving a car that is included in this recall then you will need to contact your dealer immediately to arrange for replacement and repair. That service should be done for you at no charge.
