The Louisiana State Fire Marshall's Office wants to raise awareness about how to prevent fires especially arson in the state.

Marshall Butch Browning says he wants communities to be ready to deal with buildings that have been abandoned so that if a fire starts in the structure they will be ready to handle it.

Vacant facilities and abandoned sites can offer a place for trouble to start.

Officials at the SFMO say they hope to offer more information this week to firefighters and community leaders about the following:

  • How local fire department can evaluate property relative to an emergency response
  • How communities can address issues surrounding the properties before danger happens
  • How communities can properly maintain and secure unoccupied buildings
  • How communities are moving to a new strategy of 'clear boarding'

If you suspect that a fire was intentionally set you can report all suspicious activity to the Fire Marshal's Arson Hotline at 866-946-1097 or by submitting the information online at http://sfm.dps.louisiana.gov/
