UPDATE: The suspect has been identified as 40-year-old Melvin Lainez of Lafayette.

He was charged with Aggravated Assault upon a Peace Officer, Illegal Discharge of a Dangerous Weapon and Illegal Carrying of a Weapon.

He was transported to the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center for booking.


UPDATE: LPD spokesperson Cpl. Bridgette Dugas reports that officers responded to a call of shots fired at 1:08 p.m. on Macon Rd. off of Cameron Street.

According to KATC, the officers were told that two males were possibly involved.

After LPD arrived on the scene, officers approached one of the male subjects who then pointed a gun at the officer.

Cpl. Dugas says the officer discharged his firearm but did not strike the subject.

The suspect was taken into custody.

The officer will be placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.
