Community Mourns: Tragic Drowning Incident Rocks Louisiana Neighborhood
(Prairieville, Louisiana) - A heartbreaking end to an incident that unfolded Monday night in the community of Prairieville as rescuers found the body of a 12-year-old boy who drowned after going into the pond according to a report from WAFB.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office was called out to the Keystone subdivision Monday night after they were alerted that a child had gone into the pond but had never resurfaced.
Crews immediately went into the pond to search for the young boy as a crowd gathered by the pond to pray.
People at the scene stood by for hours waiting for word on what happened.
While Sheriff's officials have not yet released while the boy went into the pond, they do know a neighbor witnessed the child doing so earlier in the evening.
Ascension Parish Sheriff Bobby Webre issued a statement Monday night:
Our community is facing a heartbreaking situation tonight. Deputies with this sheriff's office, along with teams from neighboring agencies, are actively searching for the body of a young boy who is believed to have drowned in a neighborhood pond. We are committed to utilizing every available resource to ensure his family has closure. I assure the family and our residents that we will not rest until the child is found. Thank you to dive teams with Gonzales Fire and the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Agents, and all of our local and surrounding fire departments for assisting.
A spokesperson for the department, Donovan Jackson, says the child's body was discovered later in the evening.
