LAKE CHARLES – Last night, at 7:19 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a one vehicle rollover crash south of Lake Charles on Louisiana Highway 385 (Common Street) at Fontenot Road that claimed the life of a Lake Charles man and injured another.

Preliminary investigation revealed that 21-year-old Matthew Shane Hank of Lake Charles was making a left turn from a private parking lot onto LA 385 northbound. For unknown reasons, Hank lost control of the 2004 Chevrolet pick-up truck he was driving and struck a curb east of the roadway. After hitting the curb, the truck rolled over several times and came to rest east of LA 385.
Hank was not restrained and was ejected from the vehicle. Hank sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. A passenger in Hank’s vehicle was also not restrained and received minor injuries from the crash.
A routine toxicology sample was obtained from Hank and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.
Last year in Louisiana, sixty-five percent of vehicle occupants that were killed in a crash were not properly restrained. Buckle Up Louisiana. Every trip. Every time.
Troop D troopers have investigated 26 fatal crashes for the year of 2010, resulting in 30 fatalities.
