Louisiana Income Tax Driver's License Suspension Law

Did you know your driver's license can be suspended or even revoked if you fail to pay state income tax of $1,000 or more on time?

It's true, and it's a law that has actually been on the books for quite a few years.

To get your driver's license back, not only would you need to pay your Louisiana income taxes, but you'd also need the reinstatement fee to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

However, 2023 does bring a change to this law that will make it a little easier and faster for drivers to get back on track.

Louisiana’s Deputy Secretary of Revenue, Luke Morris tells KLFY that he and state senator Mike Reese have successfully worked together to instate an amendment to this Louisiana law.

The new 2023 amendment to this law eliminates the OMV reinstatement fee someone would previously have to have paid to get their license back.

Morris tells KLFY -

"We were exhausting efforts to collect on taxes while making sure folks did have a suspended driver’s license and would not be able to drive to work to be able to earn compensation."

The hope in eliminating the OMV fee is that this will make one less financial hurdle for Louisiana residents who may find themselves in this unfortunate situation.

By eliminating the OMV fee, the amendment also hopes to speed up the process allowing people to get back to work quicker.

Louisiana state income returns and payments for 2022 are due on or before May 15th, 2023.
