Gov. Landry, city officials escorted from LSU event after ‘credible threat’
BATON ROUGE, La. — A person is in custody after a threat directed at the LSU campus prompted security teams to escort Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry and several other high-profile officials from the Pete Maravich Assembly Center Tuesday night.
According to WBRZ, the incident unfolded during a Celebration of Life honoring legendary LSU baseball coach Skip Bertman. Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sid Edwards, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff Sid Gautreaux and First Lady Sharon Landry were among those escorted from the PMAC as authorities investigated.
Threat was reportedly posted on social media
LSU Police said officers were notified around 8 p.m. about a threat directed at the university campus that had been posted on social media.
Authorities immediately began investigating the post. According to LSU Police, investigators identified an internet protocol address connected to it, located the person believed to be responsible and took that individual into custody.
The person's identity and details about the specific nature of the threat had not been released as of Tuesday night.
Gov. Landry and other officials escorted from PMAC
Landry, Edwards and Gautreaux were attending Bertman's Celebration of Life when their respective security teams escorted them from the arena.
WBRZ reported that officials became aware of the threat toward the end of the program. Security personnel allowed them to remain through the conclusion before they were escorted out.
Gautreaux initially told WBRZ that the FBI had information about what was considered a "credible threat to campus."
The incident prompted an immediate security response because of both the nature of the reported threat and the number of state and local leaders gathered inside the PMAC.
LSU Police say there is no active threat to campus
Following the investigation and detention, LSU Police said investigators no longer believe there is an active or credible threat to the LSU campus community based on the information currently available.
The investigation remains ongoing.
The development came during an emotional night at LSU as family, friends, former players and members of the community gathered to remember Bertman and his legacy.
Authorities have not yet announced whether the person detained will face criminal charges or released additional details about what was posted online.
