One person is dead following a crash that split the victim's car in half and sent his body flying into the roadway.

Capt. Kip Judice with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office said police were notified at 3 a.m. of a body lying in the roadway on Rue de Babineaux.

The investigation has so far determined that 21-year-old Leandys Hernandez-Gonzalez was driving his vehicle at an "apparent high rate of speed" when he crossed the center line, drove off the road, and struck a tree, Judice said. The crash split the vehicle, and Gonzalez was thrown from the car and onto the roadway, Judice said.

Judice said the crash was not reported until a passing motorist noticed Gonzales' road lying on the road.

The results of routine toxicology samples were pending, and the crash remained under investigation.
