Officials with the Louisiana State Police say they were called out to investigate a single-vehicle crash Sunday night on Louisiana Highway 31 near the area of Melanie Lane.

As the investigation unfolded, officials have said a vehicle was traveling down the roadway when it hit a man who was walking in the roadway.

State Police officials say 23-year-old Denzel Flugence of Lafayette was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Flugence was buckled up and not hurt as a result of the crash. The driver voluntarily took a breathalyzer test, and no alcohol was detected. As is routine, routine toxicology samples were taken from Flugence.

Troopers remind all drivers and pedestrians to pay attention to what is happening on our roadways including their surroundings.

Louisiana State Police Troop I spokesperson Peggy Bourque says officials have these reminders for pedestrians:

  • Wear reflective clothing whenever you are walking
  • If you are not wearing reflective clothing you should wear light-colored clothing
  • Don't walk on the roadway in poorly lit areas
  • Never assume that a driver can see you when you are walking on roadway
  • Walk facing the traffic

For motorists, she advises the following:

  • Avoid any distractions while driving
  • Remain aware of your surroundings
