Louisiana Man Drowns in Gulf Shores While Trying to Rescue Son in Rip Current
A Louisiana man died this past weekend in Gulf Shores, Alabama after rushing into the water to save his son from a rip current.
The unidentified 49-year-old father drowned while attempting to rescue his 17-year-old son who was struggling in the gulf waters. The teenager was able to get out of the water safely.
The incident happened just after 7:00 pm on Saturday, June 4th.
The family is from Metairie, Louisiana and they were visiting the area.
Yellow flags were flying all weekend. That means "medium hazard" in which moderate surf and/or currents are present.
The city said that the lifeguards had gone home for the day after 6:30 pm.
Unfortunately, this marks the third drowning in the area for the season.
On Saturday, May 21, Tyreke Walker, 14 from Baton Rouge, disappeared in rough surf in Orange Beach. He is presumed drowned although his body has yet to be recovered.
Then, over the Memorial Day weekend, a 61-year-old man from Kentucky drowned in Fort Morgan.
