A terrible tragedy unfolded Monday morning at a residence in the Scott area where a fire broke out in the home with one woman not being about to escape the blaze and another severely burned, according to investigators. At around 8 o'clock in the morning, firefighters started to respond to the blaze and were told people were trapped inside the home.

KLFY reports and the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office Arrest Report shows a woman who lived at home, 23-year-old Kalayshia Lagrange, was arrested yesterday for active warrants, including two bench warrants and a Probation and Parole warrant.

When firefighters responded to the scene on Latin Drive, a woman with 3rd-degree burns over half of her body was found in a neighbor's yard. The woman was quickly taken away for medical treatment.

Investigators with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office and the Lafayette Fire Department are continuing to investigate how the fire in the home started. In addition, they are working to find out what circumstances led to the one woman being trapped in the home and unable to escape.

Another victim of the fire who was able to escape the flames only had minor injuries but was also taken to an area hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and burns.

In addition to the Lafayette officials who will be investigating, the State Fire Marshal's Office is also helping to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire.

Multiple fire departments had to be called out to put out the blaze:

  • Scott Fire Department
  • Lafayette Fire Department
  • Carencro Fire Department
  • Louisiana Office of the State Fire Marshal
