Louisiana State Police officials report there has been another fatal crash involving a driver who was not wearing a seat belt in the same area where another single-vehicle crash claimed a life earlier this month.

Back on December 7, Louisiana State Police Senior Trooper Peggy Bourque with the Public Affairs Department reported Remus Tardy of Baldwin had a single-vehicle crash. Tardy, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, died when he lost control of his vehicle, overcorrected, and then crashed. He was ejected from the vehicle. He had been driving on U.S. 90 Eastbound Frontage road near Louisiana Highway 83.

In the latest crash, Bourque says there was a single-vehicle crash in the early morning hours of Thursday, December 19, when a 49-year-old woman drove off of Exit 83 after leaving the eastbound lanes of U.S. Highway 90.

Bourque says investigators are still working to figure out why Daphne Spain's vehicle veered off of the exit, but they do know that the woman's vehicle flipped over on the left side of the roadway exit lane.

Investigators say that Spain was not wearing a seatbelt, and she was ejected from her vehicle; she was pronounced dead at the scene.

As is standard in these cases, officials say they have taken toxicology samples from the Baldwin woman for analysis at a lab. Investigators will continue to work on the crash to figure out the exact thing that led to the fatal situation.

The following are reminders from Louisiana State Police about driving:

  • Never drive when you are impaired
  • Do not let anything distract you while driving
  • Remember to stay alert while driving
  • Pay attention to driving and not anything else inside or outside of the vehicle

LOOK: See how much gasoline cost the year you started driving

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

Read on to explore the cost of gas over time and rediscover just how much a gallon was when you first started driving.
