Louisiana State Police officials say, via press release, that a 41-year-old New Iberia woman died after her vehicle crossed the center line of Louisiana Highway 182 in St. Mary Parish Sunday night around 8 o'clock.

For reasons that investigators do not know, Jackie Marie Brown's Hyundai Sante Fe crossed the center of Highway 182 near the area of Louisiana Highway 670, and she was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Louisiana State Police Spokesman Trooper Thomas Gossen says that according to investigators, Brown's vehicle hit head on with another vehicle coming from the opposite direction on Highway 182.

Gossen says the St. Mary Parish Coroner's Office pronounced Brown dead at the scene, and they do not know at this time whether or not the woman was wearing a seat belt. The investigation continues.

Officials say that the driver of the other car was taken to the hospital with serious injuries as that driver was not buckled up. Gossen says, as is routine, they have taken routine blood samples from Brown and the driver of the other car.

There have been four people who have died in fatal crashes in this first part of 2021.

Gossen reminds everyone that you must wear a seat belt at all times while you are in a vehicle. He says that why not everyone will always be saved, if you wear a seat belt while you are in moving vehicle your chances of survival are much greater. You can face serious fines for not wearing a seat belt.
