The New Year in Lafayette started with several people ending up in local hospitals after two groups of individuals reportedly exchanged gunfire.

The Lafayette Police Department was called out to the 2100 block of the NE Evangeline Thruway at approximately 2:24 am on January 1, 2025, after reports of multiple gunshots.

Once on scene, an officer encountered two groups of individuals actively exchanging gunfire. The officer discharged their firearm in response to the threat.

Several individuals were transported to a local hospital for treatment due to injuries sustained during the incident. (It was not denoted if the officer was injured but we do not believe that to be the case.)

As is protocol in cases with officer-involved shootings, the Louisiana State Police has been requested to conduct an independent investigation into the incident.
