51-year-old Michael Potter, a Deputy Marshal with the Opelousas City Marshal’s Office, has been for allegedly punching his "common law" wife in the face earlier this week.

The wife told authorities that the physical altercation started when Potter woke up in a bad mood, leading to the two arguing throughout the day. After leaving for awhile, Potter’s wife says she came home to find him standing in the living room. That’s when she says he punched her twice in the face, then left the home with his duty weapon along with another gun after she began defending herself.

She suffered two small cuts to her face but did not need medical attention.

Potter turned himself in at 5:00 a.m. on Thursday morning. He now sits in the St. Landry Parish Jail on 1 count Domestic Abuse Battery and $2,500 bond.
