Prosecutors in central Louisiana have elected not to resurrect a rape case against one of two deputy city marshals charged with murder in the shooting death of a 6-year-old boy.

The Rapides Parish district attorney's office had decided to review the 2011 case against Derrick Stafford after November's shooting. Prosecutors had abandoned his indictment on aggravated rape charges in 2012.

In a letter Friday to The Associated Press, District Attorney Phillip Terrell says he concluded it was "appropriate" for the previous administration to dismiss those charges against Stafford, a Marksville police lieutenant.

Last month, an Avoyelles Parish grand jury indicted Stafford and Norris Greenhouse Jr. on second-degree murder charges for the Nov. 3 shooting that killed Jeremy Mardis and critically injured his father, Chris Few.
