St. Landry Council Delays Library System Decision

OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) — St. Landry Parish residents may yet have an opportunity to vote for a parish-wide library system, but it won't happen in May as library supporters had hoped.

The Daily World reports the St. Landry Parish Council held a special meeting Wednesday to discuss setting a vote.

But nobody on the council seemed to be in the mood to back the library coalition's plan of putting a 5.5-mill property tax before the voters to fund creation of a parish-wide library system.

Bruce Gaudin, who is serving as spokesman for the library coalition, said St. Landry Parish is the only parish in the state without a parish-wide library system.

Parish President Bill Fontenot, who supports the idea, pointed out most other parishes adopted a parish-wide library system five or six decades ago.
