Today St. Landry Parish President Bill Fontenot joined 'Mornings With Ken and Bernie' to discuss this past weekend's historic tax proposal election.

According to Fontenot,

On Saturday night I would have said Neil Armstrong would have been there, our first man on the moon he'd have probably said 'Our citizens took a small step for a 'yes' vote and a giant leap for progress'.

When asked why the vote for a two cent sales tax in the rural areas of St. Landry Parish was historic Fontenot replied,

This is a first in the history of the parish that there is parish-wide fund that has now become a law that roads will be paved with certain funds.  These funds are guaranteed to be collected for the next 15 years beginning January 1, 2014... A few of our neighboring parishes have such a tax and St. Landry has been behind the curve.

We asked Fontenot why he thought the tax proposal was so successful and he said,

I think our citizens have finally reached a tipping point where they are tired of living on roads that are so terrible all across the parish.

Fontenot went on to explain how the tax will be collected and how the road improvements will be prioritized and implemented.  You can hear all of his comments by listening to the interview:
