State Police report that Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft has requested that their detectives investigate a shooting in the 300 block of Chateau Road that involved a Lafayette police officer.

State Police say the initial investigation indicates that around 5:40 p.m. Sunday, Lafayette police officers were responding to an attempted suicide complaint at a home on Chateau Road.

When Lafayette police arrived on the scene, they found 34-year-old Harold J. Bastin of Lafayette in the yard.

Bastin, who was armed with a handgun, engaged officers, according to Louisiana State Police. A Lafayette police officer fired his weapon at Bastin, and the man was fatally wounded.

Bastin was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafayette Parish Coroner.

No officers were injured during the encounter.

The case remains under investigation.
