Deadly Opelousas Fire Under Investigation

Authorities say one person has died in a house fire near Opelousas. Flames erupted Thursday night at a single-story brick house. Authorities say 54 year old Curtis Iles was found dead inside the home. Chief Ray Mendenhall says two firefighters from St. Landry Parish Fire Department District 3 sustained injuries from the hot, heavy smoke. Both were able to walk away. Fire personnel hurried to the scene from a graduation ceremony for 15 firefighting cadets at the Opelousas Civic Center. Firefighters quickly changed out dress shoes and uniforms for protective gear. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
