Investigators at the Louisiana Fire Marshal's Office are trying to determine the cause of a residential fire that claimed the life of a Mamou couple Saturday.

State Fire Marshall Brant Thompson reported firefighters responded to the fire on Birch Street around 2 a.m. Saturday.

Upon entering the home firefighters located the bodies of 55-year-old Regina LeJeune and 57-year-old Michael LeJeune in a bedroom.

The fire caused significant damage to the home, causing a portion of it to collapse.

While no official cause of the fire was reported, investigators determined te fire originated in the carport area, where witnesses said the couple was having a BBQ earlier that evening.

Investigators determined that there were no working smoke alarms in the house at the time of the fire.
