Walmart Joins Target and Amazon in Revamping Return Policy

(KMDL-FM) Walmart has joined the likes of Amazon and Target in announcing that it will be making major changes to the store's holiday return policy. This news comes as many shoppers across Louisiana and the nation are planning for retail's "big day", Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

You might be wondering, what's the big deal with all of the sudden changes in so many major retailers' return programs? Well, the bottom is the "bottom line"; it's all about money. Retailers, once they get yours, don't want to give it back. They also know that you're a bit lazy and apathetic when it comes to doing things you don't want to do.

Here are some real numbers from the National Retail Federation. Their data suggests that some $743 billion in merchandise is returned to retail outlets every year. Holiday shopping accounts for approximately 15% of that total. That figures to be a little over $110 billion in returns just from holiday purchases.

Despite what you might think, the changes in the return policies at Amazon, Target, and now Walmart are actually done to benefit you, the consumer. The changes make returning and exchanging items easier and simpler if you follow the process.

What Has Changed with Walmart's Holiday Return Policy?

Walmart typically allows a 90-day return window for most items. The exceptions come in items sold through Walmart Marketplace, which have a 30-day window. There is also a 30-day window to return consumer electronics, and if you purchase a wireless phone, you'll only have two weeks to make a return or opt for an exchange.

You can view the complete Walmart return policy via their website. But the basic synopsis of the changes is this. If you bought it at Walmart between October 1 and December 31, you will have until January 31 to make a return. That's not for every purchase, but for most purchases.
