It is the little things that sometimes hit the hardest. In Lafayette, Olive Garden has casually existed near the Acadiana Mall for decades. It has been a comfort stop for bad days, family dinners, and familiar meals. So watching Central Louisiana finally get its own Olive Garden has struck a chord far beyond Alexandria.

On Monday, January 12, Olive Garden officially opened its Alexandria location, and the community response was immediate. Doors opened at 11 a.m., but by 10 a.m., a line had already formed outside.

From Announcement To Reality

The project was first announced in March 2025, shortly after Johnny Carino’s closed its long-running Alexandria location. The new Olive Garden sits on South MacArthur Drive at the former Carino’s site and represents a more than $3 million investment in the area.

For many Cenla residents, this was not just another restaurant opening. It was something people had been asking for, joking about, and hoping would happen for decades.

Jobs, Community, And Familiar Comfort

According to reporting from KALB, the restaurant has already created more than 150 jobs. General manager Jacqui Cioni described the reception as overwhelming in the best way, noting how supportive and welcoming the community has been since opening.

Customers echoed that excitement, with some pointing out menu options like gluten-free pasta that are harder to find locally. Others were simply happy to finally enjoy unlimited salad and breadsticks without driving out of town.

Viral Lines And A Reminder Not To Judge Joy

Videos of the opening day crowds quickly went viral, with reactions pouring in from across Louisiana and beyond. Some poked fun at the excitement over a national chain. But for Cenla, Olive Garden is not “basic.” It is new. It is wanted. And it is theirs.

In a state known for incredible local restaurants, this was a little reminder that everyone has their comfort food, and there is room for all of it. Sometimes, you just never yuck somebody else’s yum.

Good luck to Olive Garden in Cenla, and congratulations to everyone finally enjoying that long-awaited first meal (breadsticks included).
