Johnston Street could be facing the next big road construction project in Lafayette.

According to a report from KLFY, the DOTD plans to make major changes to Johnston Street (U.S. Hwy 167) between Ambassador Caffery and Maurice. Motorists have complained about dangerous crossovers and left turns that seemingly take forever during peak drive times.

The DOTD says that stretch of Johnston sees over 34,000 vehicles per day. The agency has plans for a massive overhaul including 40 turns: 33 J-turns, three left turns, and four right turns. Seven of those J-turns will have traffic signals.

Not only will DOTD be adding to Johnston Street, but they will also be eliminating 25 crossovers in an effort to provide safety and increase capacity.

This project is scheduled to go out for bid in June and DOTD hopes to begin construction by September. This will be another lengthy project so motorists who use that particular roadway frequently should prepare for the long haul as the project is slated to last two to three years.

Hopefully, the revamped roadway will be worth the headache in the end. Johnston Street has definitely needed the overhaul and many have suggested that Ambassador to the Thruway near campus could use some attention as well.

Personally, I'd love to see it happen along with the powerlines being buried along the way, but I'm not sure if local businesses along Johnston would be happy about that.

In total, the project work zone will cover 5.3 miles and cost somewhere between $12 and $13 million.
