A crash this afternoon in Lafayette proves fatal.

Corporal Paul Mouton with Lafayette Police tells KPEL an SUV was traveling west on West Congress while a green car was driving north on St. Mary when they crashed in the intersection. The SUV flipped several times before landing on it's roof.

One person was killed in the crash.

"The driver of that vehicle, a [71]-year-old male of Lafayette, was transported to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead," Mouton says. "The driver of the green Oldsmobile received only minor injuries."

Mouton says they're interviewing witnesses to see who had the red light.

The driver of the car was taken to the Lafayette Police Department to submit a statement.
