(KPEL) -- A Lafayette Parish work release inmate is facing charges of escape after walking away from his job site in New Iberia.

Deputy Chief Varden Guillory with the Eunice Police Department says officers were initially notified of Jason Minix's disappearance from the work release detail after a woman claiming to be his former step-daughter told them he stole her cell phone.

"The female also stated that he's supposed to be incarcerated but has work release," Guillory says.

Eunice Police immediately contacted the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office, and it was confirmed Minix was supposed to be at a job site in New Iberia. Two Lafayette Parish detectives were sent to Eunice, Guillory says, but when they arrived on the scene, Minix ran from them.

Guillory says police spoke to witnesses in the area who gave them Minix's description. One witness noticed Minix going into a home on West Peach Street in Eunice.

"Officers then went to the residence and spoke to Jonathon Cain at the door," Guillory says. "He stated that nobody was home then gave permission to search the home."

When officers searched the home, they found Minix hiding in a closet. He was arrested and charged with simple escape. He has been transferred to Lafayette Parish.

Cain was arrested for interfering with police and subsequently released.

The woman who initially reported her cell phone stolen declined to file charges against Minix.
